*Ecuador’s state-owned power generation company, Corporación Eléctrica del Ecuador (Celec), has announced the launch of a subcontracting process to acquire an additional 160MW for the national grid, which is suffering repeated blackouts as a result of low water levels at hydroelectric power stations. Celec announced plans for a new 120MW thermal power plant in Durán canton, Guayas province. Celec is also planning to expand the Machala II power plant in El Oro province by renting generators to supply an additional 40MW. The deadline for proposals related to the contract is 16 October.
