Mexico: On 4 October US President
Joe Biden called Mexico’s new President
Claudia Sheinbaum to congratulate her on her “
historic inauguration as the first woman to serve as president of Mexico” according to a readout of the call by the White House. The readout cites the two leaders as reaffirming “
the deep ties between the US and Mexico” and emphasising their “
commitment to continuing the strong and collaborative partnership that will advance prosperity and security in both countries.” The US delegation to Mexico, where Sheinbaum took office on 1 October, was headed up by First Lady
Jill Biden and included US Ambassador to Mexico
Ken Salazar; US Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services
Xavier Becerra; and US Administrator of the Small Business Administration
Isabel Casillas Guzman, among others. A White House statement dated 2 October notes that Jill Biden was in Mexico from 30 September to 2 October and during her visit she delivered remarks at a reception hosted by Salazar where she highlighted the US administration’s “
commitment to strengthening the [bilateral] partnership”. Jill Biden also attended a dinner hosted by Sheinbaum before her inauguration where she “
