In brief: Uruguay’s main union calls on citizens to back pensions reform

*Uruguay’s main trade union organisation, Plenario Intersindical de Trabajadores-Convención Nacional de Trabajadores (PIT-CNT), has called on the population to vote in favour of a social security reform that will be put to the vote in a referendum due to be held simultaneously with presidential and parliamentary elections on 27 October. A video broadcast on the official channel of the PIT-CNT, a major proponent of the reform, explains the key points of the reform and states it would ensure the right to a dignified retirement. The reform mandates that basic pensions must not be lower than the minimum wage; reduces the retirement age from 65 to 60; and re-nationalises pension fund management. The proposed reform has not received the backing of the government led by President Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou or Yamandú Orsi, the presidential candidate for the main opposition coalition, the left-wing Frente Amplio, who is seen as the frontrunner in October’s election.
