Introduction

During a busy tour of South America in November, the most significant moment for China’s President Xi Jinping was probably his inauguration of the Chancay mega-port in Peru. The port, constructed and paid for by China, is the deepest on South America’s Pacific coast and could transform the continent’s trade relationship with Asia. We begin this December 2024 edition of the Latin American Regional Report: Andean Group with a discussion of the port’s potential economic impact for Peru and its neighbours.
