In brief: Costa Rica’s unemployment rises

*Costa Rica’s national statistics institute (Inec) has released new figures showing that the unemployment rate for the September-November 2024 rolling quarter was 7.3%, up from 7.0% in the previous (August-October) rolling quarter and from 6.6% in the July-September 2024 rolling quarter. In year-on-year terms however, Inec said there was no significant variation on the same quarter in 2023. In absolute terms, the unemployed population in the September-November 2024 quarter was 173,000 people, of which 98,000 were men and 76,000 women. The same report also indicates an ongoing gender imbalance in unemployment, with an 8.1% unemployment rate amongst women, compared with 6.7% for men. This compares with a 6.5% unemployment rate among men and a 7.6% rate among women in the previous rolling quarter.
