Congress approved the 2006 budget of Q37.7bn (US$4.96bn) on 30 November. The main amendment was to introduce a line of spending of Q1.5bn to repair the damage done by Hurricane Stan in October. The biggest spending department in 2006 will be education: it has budget of Q5.2bn. The communications ministry is the next biggest, with a budget of Q3.5bn. The defence budget is Q1.1bn.
