President Fidel Castro admitted that there were severe problems with the country's electricity system. He said that the country's two main power stations, Guiteras and Felton, had major problems. The major problems with the electricity supply industry and the withering of the sugar industry are the chief reasons why we doubt the government's claim that the economy grew by 9% in 2005. Daily power cuts are a fact of life for most Cubans. President Castro claimed that the country could do without 70% of the electricity it currently uses.
