*The board of Brazil’s federal electricity regulator (Aneel) has given its approval for Brazilian energy company Bolt Energy to import electricity from Venezuela to the northern state of Roraima. Bolt has been authorised to sell electricity at a price of R$1,096.11 (US$192.45) per megawatt-hour (MWh) until April this year, and the government will pay the company R$41.2m to cover the cost of the energy imports. According to Aneel, Roraima received energy imports from Venezuela from 2001-2019, but in March 2019 the Brazilian government under former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023) halted the supply of energy from Venezuela to Roraima. Aneel expressed hope that the resumption of imports from Venezuela will shore up Roraima’s energy security. Since 2019, Roraima has relied entirely on local energy sources, such as diesel, as it is the only state in Brazil not connected to the national grid.
