TRINIDAD & TOBAGO: Panday faces trial

Political and racial tensions are likely to increase on the islands if the trial of former prime minister Basdeo Panday, due in court on 23 January, goes ahead. Panday, chairman of the predominantly Indo-Trinidadian United National Congress party, has been charged with knowingly making a false declaration to the Trinidad Integrity Commission, by failing to declare a London bank account he jointly held with his wife, Oma Panday, for the years 1997-1999 when he served as prime minister.
