School violence in the spotlight

On 12 March the coordinator for the centrist opposition Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) in the Mexico City (CDMX) chamber of deputies, Tania Larios, presented an initiative to include bullying in the state penal code. Larios was addressing an issue that has increased in severity in recent years and which was recently thrust into the spotlight due to a shocking incident that took place in early February. Such legislative initiatives, together with rising demands from civil society groups, are raising pressure on the federal government led by President Claudia Sheinbaum to demonstrate it is tackling the problem.
