In brief: Brazil’s social security head dismissed over alleged corruption

*Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has ordered the dismissal of Alessandro Stefanutto, who had led the national social security institute (INSS) since 2023. Stefanutto has been implicated in an investigation into an alleged scheme to improperly divert funds from pensions and retirement payments. The federal police (PF) suspect that R$6.3bn (US$1.1bn) was diverted from 2019-2024. The PF operation, carried out in conjunction with auditors from the comptroller general’s office (CGU), was launched yesterday and involved over 200 search and seizure warrants and six arrest warrants. The PF did not specify who the warrants were for. Meanwhile, six INSS officials have been suspended.
