Mulling a response to US tariffs. On 3 April Nicaragua’s government said that it had started to meet with economic teams to analyse the impact of the new tariffs announced on 2 April by the US government led by President Donald Trump against imports from other countries. Nicaragua was initially hit with a 18% tariff, second only to Guyana (38%) in the region, and well above the general 10% rate levied on the rest of Latin America and the Caribbean although Trump announced on 9 April that these higher tariffs would be paused for 90 days – along with those for other countries bar China hit by higher rates.
