Way forward on mining? In a speech to business lobby group CCIAP on 23 April, Panama’s President José Raúl Mulino said he was seeking a “real association” to resolve the copper mine dispute with Minera Panama, a subsidiary of First Quantum Minerals (FQM) of Canada. The dispute goes back to November 2023 when Panama’s supreme court declared the existing copper mining contract to be illegal and banned all mining in the country. Recently FQM dropped its US$20bn arbitration case against Panama, which analysts suggest might indicate a new deal is under discussion.
