CHILE: Boric receives blueprint for ending Mapuche conflict

Chile’s President Gabriel Boric was formally presented with the report drawn up by the presidential commission for peace and understanding on 6 May, nearly two years in the making. Boric established the commission in June 2023 to help try and resolve the intractable Mapuche conflict in the south of the country. At the time he acknowledged that the process would be “long and laborious” and that the fruits of its decisions would “not be immediate”. The reaction of right-wing opposition parties suggests that the report’s recommendations might not get beyond the page if one of their presidential candidates were to triumph in elections later this year.
