In brief: Poverty declines in Peru

*Peru’s national statistics institute (Inei) has announced that 27.6% of the population was living in poverty in 2024, equivalent to 9.4m people. This represents a reduction of 1.4 percentage points compared with 2023, meaning that approximately 386,000 people moved out of poverty during this period. The drop in poverty mostly occurred in urban areas, where poverty rates fell from 26.4% to 24.8%. In rural areas, poverty fell from 39.8% to 39.3%. Extreme poverty affected 5.5% of the population in 2024, equivalent to 1.9m people. This was down by 0.2 percentage points compared with 2023, with around 50,000 people moving out of extreme poverty. Extreme poverty fell most sharply in rural areas, from 16.2% in 2023 to 15.5% in 2024. In urban areas the extreme poverty rate fell from 3.2% to 3.0%.
