*Peru’s President
Dina Boluarte has appointed
Eduardo Arana as her new prime minister following
the resignation on 13 May of
Gustavo Adrianzén (2024-2025), who had been due to face an impeachment vote in congress over the government’s handling of illegal mining. Arana has served since September 2023 as justice minister – a role which will now be filled by the lawyer
Juan Alcántara Medrano. The cabinet resigned en masse in line with protocol following the premier’s resignation and has now been reinstated by Boluarte; congress must hold a confidence vote on the new cabinet within 30 days. The government should be able to clear this hurdle, given that the right-wing parties which control congress remain broadly aligned with Boluarte, although this support
is beginning to fray in the run-up to the April 2026 general elections. The conservative Podemos, the joint second largest party in congress with 14 seats in the 130-seat chamber, yesterday announced that it would vote against Arana’s appointment
“for his role in the failure of this government and shameful political horse trading”. Podemos called on other parties to join forces and
“establish a transitional government”.End of preview - This article contains approximately 188 words.
