*Teachers affiliated with Mexico’s influential Coordinadora Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educación (CNTE) teachers’ union have rejected the salary increase announced by the government led by President Claudia Sheinbaum on 15 May. Sheinbaum made the announcement to coincide with national teachers’ day, announcing a retroactive salary increase of 9% from 1 January and an additional 1% increase from September this year. The government also announced it will increase holiday days for teachers by one week. While the announcements have been welcomed by the Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educación (SNTE) teachers’ union, the CNTE issued a statement saying it rejected the salary increase “which lacks clarity, justice and true benefit for the national teaching profession”. The CNTE organised protests on 16 May demanding greater wage hikes as well as continuing calls for the repeal of the 2007 ISSSTE law, which was implemented by former president Felipe Calderón (2006-2012) and changed the way state workers’ pensions were calculated and distributed.
