In brief: Brazil’s unemployment rate up in quarterly terms

*Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has announced that the unemployment rate in the first quarter of 2025 was 7.0%, up by 0.8 percentage points compared with the previous quarter but down by 0.9 percentage points year-on-year. The underemployment rate in Q1 was 15.9%, while the informality rate was 38.0%. For men, the unemployment rate stood at 5.7% versus 8.7% for women. Unemployment was highest in the states of Pernambuco (11.6%), Bahia (10.9%), and Piauí (10.2%), and lowest in Santa Catarina (3.0%), Rondônia (3.1%), and Mato Grosso (3.5%).
