MEXICO: CDMX officials murdered

A fatal attack on two key aides to Clara Brugada, the mayor of Mexico City (CDMX), has sent shockwaves through the left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena), which has ruled the capital since 2018. Although the precise motives of the killings remain unknown, they represent an attack on those close to the heart of Morena in one of its largest political strongholds. It also shatters the image of CDMX as a comparative oasis of security following President Claudia Sheinbaum’s tenure as mayor of the capital city (2018-2023), during which time she and now-federal public security minister Omar García Harfuch worked to crack down on violent crime.
