*Supporters of Bolivia’s former president
Evo Morales (2006-2019) have begun blocking roads in the central department of Cochabamba to demand that he be allowed to register as a candidate in the August presidential election. Morales, who is barred from running due to presidential term limits, has claimed to be unfairly excluded after he was
unable to register ahead of last month’s deadline. Interior Minister
Roberto Ríos said yesterday that protesters were aiming
“not only to blockade the cities, but the whole department – they’re even trying to block the sale of products to the population”. The blockades are disrupting fuel supply in Cochabamba, according to
Marcos Eduardo Durán, director of trade and imports at the state hydrocarbon company Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales Bolivianos (YPFB), who said yesterday that fuel trucks carrying 31m litres of fuel had been held up at 13 roadblocks, mostly in Cochabamba.
