*Bolivia’s rural development & land minister,
Yamil Flores, has said that the agricultural sector has lost B$350m (US$50.7m)
during the first eight days of roadblocks by supporters of former president
Evo Morales (2006-2019), which began on 2 June to pressure the electoral authorities to enable Morales’ presidential candidacy in the August general elections despite him being barred due to term limits. Of the B$350m total losses, Flores said that B$299m related to perishable goods such as vegetables which could not be transported to markets from the eastern department of Santa Cruz and the central department of Cochabamba. Flores added that the delivery of chicks to poultry farms has also fallen by 75% since the start of the blockade, which he said would translate into shortages of chicken in the next 15 days.
“Then, Evo Morales and his planning team will come out and say that the government is to blame for shortages and high prices, when they’re the ones who are causing these problems,” Flores said.
