Shoring up ties with Taipei. On 4 June Guatemala’s President Bernardo Arévalo began a five-day visit to Taiwan, in what was his first official trip there since taking office in January 2024. Heading up a delegation which included his foreign minister Carlos Ramiro Martínez, economy minister Gabriela García, and presidential spokesperson Santiago Palomo, among others, Arévalo announced various agreements to boost investment and technological development. These include plans to establish a mechanism to bolster high-level bilateral dialogue, the inking of a letter of intent to encourage investment through supply chains, and a letter of intent to promote cooperation regarding semiconductors.
