*Mexico’s telecoms regulator Instituto Federal de Telecomunicaciones (IFT) has fined wireless telecommunications provider Telcel, a subsidiary of Mexican telecoms corporation América Móvil, over alleged monopolistic practices. In a statement, the IFT said the sanction related to Telcel offering incentives to convenience store chain Oxxo, a subsidiary of Mexican multinational beverage and retail company Femsa, and food and beverage company Impulsora de Mercados de México (Immex), another Femsa subsidiary, on the condition that they did not sell SIM cards from competitors. The investigation, which began in August 2021, found that this practice took place between January 2021 and January 2024. The IFT announced fines of M$1.78bn (US$93.8m) for Telcel and of M$19.5m each for Oxxo and Immex. In a statement, América Móvil said that Telcel denied having committed the practice referred to by the IFT and considered it an
“arbitrary and disproportionate fine” based on allegations from competitors and resulting from
“a biased investigation, lacking evidence”. América Móvil said Telcel would challenge the
“abusive investigation process and this arbitrary fine” through all available legal means.
