The danger posed by illegal mining has received renewed attention in
Peru and
Ecuador following two massacres in late April and early May which left 24 people dead. The Andean region has long suffered from violence associated with criminal mining activity, but the worst bloodshed has generally been associated with Colombia and Venezuela.
