Andean Group - June 2025
Introduction
The danger posed by illegal mining has received renewed attention in Peru and Ecuador following two massacres in late April and early May which left 24 people dead. The Andean region has long suffered from violence associated with criminal mining activity, but the worst bloodshed has generally been associated with Colombia and Venezuela. However, as we explore in this June 2025 edition of the Latin American Regional Report: Andean Group, the attacks in Ecuador and Peru underscore the transnational nature of the problem.
