*Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released its latest figures for unemployment, showing a jobless rate of 6.2% for the rolling quarter of March-May 2025, equivalent to 6.8m people. This marks the second consecutive rolling quarter to register a decrease. The unemployment rate in the February-April quarter stood at 6.6%, down from 7.0% from January-March 2025 and from 6.8% in the rolling quarter ending in February 2025. The latest figure is also down from the 7.1% unemployment rate registered in March-May 2024. The number of employed people in March-May this year totalled 103.9m, up 2.5% year-on-year. The falling unemployment rate in recent months comes despite high interest rates in Brazil. The central bank (BCB) has been raising the country’s benchmark interest rate since September 2024,
reaching 15.0% on 18 June.
