US sanctions TdA leader

Venezuela: On 24 June the US State Department announced that it was sanctioning Giovanni Vicente Mosquera Serrano, an alleged key leader of Tren de Aragua (TdA), a transnational criminal group originating from Venezuela. According to the State Department, Mosquera is a “notorious member” of TdA, which the US designated a foreign terrorist organisation (FTO) in February, who has “overseen narcotics trafficking efforts and murders on behalf of the FTO in Colombia”.  It adds that Mosquera has also been responsible for extortion efforts on TdA’s behalf as well as managing the financial proceeds of the FTO’s criminal activities. The State Department is offering a reward of up to US$3m for information leading to his arrest and/or conviction. Also on 24 June the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced that it was adding Mosquera to its Top 10 Most Wanted List. On the same day, the US Department of Justice unsealed an indictment charging Mosquera with drug trafficking and terrorism-related criminal activity.
