BOLIVIA: Deadlock over lithium contracts

It was an unruly scene. After a 14-hour session of the chamber of deputies and in the early hours of 4 July, angry lawmakers flattened ballot boxes, drenched Bolivia’s energy minister with water, and pelted him with garbage. Speaker Omar Yujra finally accepted the inevitable, suspending the session with no date fixed to resume. At the core of the dispute is the future of two lithium mining contracts valued at US$2bn and involving Chinese and Russian companies.
