EL SALVADOR: Saca reaches halfway point

President Tony Saca passed the halfway mark of his five-year mandate on 8 January. He had something to celebrate: the economy, for so long stuttering, recovered to post 4.2% GDP growth in 2006. Saca will be judged, however, not on his ability to boost growth but on his success in combating organised crime. He is all too aware of this and wasted no time in labelling citizen security the "A1 priority" for the second half of his term.
