Costa Rica faces momentous moment

Costa Rica’s legislative assembly has set up a special commission to debate a request from the supreme court to lift President Rodrigo Chaves’ immunity from prosecution. Chaves stands accused of involvement in the alleged misappropriation of funds from the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (Cabei). The commission begins its deliberations just as the February 2026 general election campaign is taking shape.
