REGION: Caricom asks for payment of sugar aid

Caricom has called on the European Union to release the money it has pledged for sugar producers in the region. In an attempt to cushion the blow of a 36% reduction in EU subsidies for sugar from producers in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific (the ACP countries), the EU promised â‚ ¬40 million (US$51.6 million) to help the producers diversify. The cut took effect in January, but the EU says the money will not reach the countries until the middle of 2007.
