MONTSERRAT: Warning over volcano activity

The volcano that destroyed Montserrat's capital, Plymouth, in 1997 shot a cloud of ash more than eight kilometres into the sky on 8 January. The tiny island's governor, Deborah Barnes Jones, announced the mandatory evacuation of residents living on the north-western side of the volcano's base on the same day. The police force was deployed to ensure nobody could stay behind.
