In brief: Mexico’s Sheinbaum unveils investment in irrigation

*Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced a “historic investment” of over M$60bn (US$3.19bn) in the modernisation of irrigation districts in different parts of the country. The irrigation districts in question are located in the states of Sonora, Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Coahuila, Durango, Tamaulipas, Aguascalientes, Guanajuato, Michoacán, and Morelos, as well as Mexico City (CDMX). The investment is being made through Mexico’s national water commission (Conagua) as part of the México se Tecnifica (Mexico Modernises) programme which is being carried out in agreement with farmers to make agricultural water use more efficient with the aim of recovering three times the amount of water consumed annually in CDMX and distributing it to urban areas to guarantee access to water as a right. The programme aims to modernise water usage across more than 200,000 hectares of farmland and recover 2.8bn cubic metres of water for human consumption.
