COLOMBIA: Rocked by guerrilla attacks

Colombia suffered perhaps its worst day of guerrilla violence this decade on 21 August. A bombing in the south-western city of Cali left seven people dead and over 70 injured, just hours after 13 police officers were killed when their helicopter was shot down over the north-western department of Antioquia. The attacks underscored the failings of President Gustavo Petro’s ambitious ‘total peace’ plan, which three years into his presidency has produced few tangible results after peace talks collapsed with most armed groups.
