Killing of deputies reveals extent of corruption

The discovery of the bodies of three Salvadorean congressmen and their driver in a burnt out car on a remote stretch of road on the outskirts of Guatemala City in mid February set off a chain of events which revealed how far organised crime has corrupted the state. The Guatemalan police officers who admitted to the killings were themselves murdered in jail days later. The deputy director of the national police force (PNC) fled to Costa Rica while the head of the unit charged with combating organised crime was dismissed. President Oscar Berger has so far refused to accept the resignations of the interior minister and chief of police, despite claims there are at least two death squads operating within the PNC, one of which is allegedly under orders from the interior ministry.
