Mexico is upping its fight against extortion. On 6 August the public security minister, Omar García Harfuch, announced the arrest of 27 people, which he said took place as part of the government’s national strategy against extortion. The strategy was launched a month earlier, with President Claudia Sheinbaum admitting her government had yet to effectively tackle the crime. Alongside the national strategy, she sent an initiative to congress for lawmakers to create a general law against extortion. If successful, the fight against extortion could be a major achievement of Sheinbaum’s security strategy, enabling her to succeed in an area that is viewed as a weak point of the government of her predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024).End of preview - This article contains approximately 1382 words.
