GUATEMALA: Pérez seizes on security issue to boost profile

Otto Pérez Molina, a former chief of military intelligence who is running for the right-of-centre Partido Patriota in September's elections, is trying to turn the current public-security fiasco in Guatemala to his advantage. Pérez insisted on an impeachment hearing in the legislative assembly for the interior minister, Carlos Vielmann, in an effort to score points off the government and to keep security at the top of the electoral agenda.
