Bush and Chávez vie for influence

The next rounds between the US and Venezuela to win Latin American hearts and minds will be fought in Central America and the Caribbean. Indeed, both US President George W Bush and Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez finished their recent tours of Latin American countries in the subregion. Bush held talks with the Guatemalan President, Oscar Berger, on 12 March before moving on to Mexico. Chávez , meanwhile, visited President Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua and made a surprising call to Jamaica and Haiti.
