PERU: Ties with Mexico deteriorate
The foreign affairs committee of Peru’s congress voted by 12-6 on 8 September to declare Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum persona non grata. The full congress will debate the issue in the next few weeks, but it is thought likely to endorse the committee’s recommendation. Committee members said Sheinbaum had shown a “hostile” attitude towards Peru, refusing to recognise the legitimacy of Peru’s incumbent president, Dina Boluarte, and making “high-flown and offensive” statements about the country.
