CUBA: Floridian prepare for mass exodus

On 8 March, personnel from 85 US law enforcement agencies participated in mock exercises to practise what they would do if thousands of Cubans flee the island in boats and head for Florida when Fidel Castro dies. The US government organised the drill, codenamed Operation Vigilant Sentry, in order to avoid the scenario that occurred in 1980 during the Mariel crisis, when around 125,000 Cubans landed in South Florida over a six-month period causing severe problems in social services and housing.
