When security forces raided a site in Vista Hermosa municipality, Michoacán state at the end of September, they expected to find a training camp for organised crime. However, despite arresting 38 men and seizing weapons and tactical gear, the camp was not what it seemed. Rather than housing trainee cartel members, it served as a training camp for members of the evangelical Mexico-headquartered megachurch, La Luz del Mundo. Specifically, the men were training to become part of a special corps to protect the church’s leader, Naasón Joaquín García, and his family.
