Relations between Mexico and Peru have continued to sour since the government of President José Jerí severed diplomatic relations on 3 November. Since then, Peru’s congress has declared Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum persona non grata and Mexico’s top diplomat in Lima has abandoned the country. Mexico’s decision to grant asylum to Peru’s former prime minister, Betssy Chávez, who served during the presidency of Pedro Castillo (2021-2022), was the catalyst for the dispute.
