MEXICO: Tensions high following protests

Protesters took to the streets across Mexico on 15 November in multifaceted demonstrations against violence, corruption, and the government more widely. The driving force behind the protests is up for debate, with President Claudia Sheinbaum saying they had been orchestrated by right-wing opposition forces and the opposition claiming they were organic, youth-led ‘Generation Z’ protests of the sort seen in Peru, Paraguay, and other countries in recent months. The demonstrations in Mexico City (CDMX) turned violent, with protesters clashing with police. This violence, and the questions around the organisation of the protests, has threatened to overshadow the issues against which many were demonstrating.
