Jerí’s tough on crime approach underpins popularity

Peru’s President José Jerí has promised to extend a state of emergency declared in Lima and the contiguous port city of Callao in response to violent crime and extortion. Jerí declared a 30-day state of emergency on 22 October, within days of replacing the impeached Dina Boluarte (2022-2025). Speaking during his now customary ‘supervision’ of security operations on 18 November, Jerí said his government was “at war” with organised crime and was determined to keep the pressure up.
