Far right Kast poised to win presidency

Only complacency can stop José Antonio Kast from winning Chile’s presidential elections after he made it through the first-round contest loaded with right-wing rivals on 16 November. He will now face Jeannette Jara, the candidate of the ruling left-of-centre coalition, in what should be a one-sided run-off on 14 December when the vast majority of voters who backed those fellow right-wingers should coalesce behind his candidacy giving him a commanding victory. Kast’s far-right Partido Republicano (PR) will also be the largest party in the lower chamber of congress and increased its presence in the senate, but fell short of securing a majority in either body, meaning he would need to seek consensus to advance his legislative agenda.
