Bolsonaro arrested and imprisoned

Brazil’s supreme court (STF) has ruled that former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023) must begin serving his prison sentence of 27 years and three months after an apparent attempt to flee from house arrest. The decision marks a blow for the far-right populist ‘Bolsonarismo’ movement. With the movement’s torchbearer behind bars, the far right will need to choose a new leader to rally behind for the 2026 elections. Meanwhile, São Paulo’s governor, Tarcísio de Freitas, widely considered a potential political heir to Bolsonaro, has said that the Brazilian right will organise itself, although he did not suggest that he will be the leader to unite the right and run for president.
