MEXICO: Sheinbaum meets Trump - finally

After one abandoned attempt and multiple telephone conversations, Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has finally met in person with US President Donald Trump some 10 months after he took office. While the pair have cooperated closely on issues such as organised crime, migration, and trade, they had not yet held a face-to-face meeting. This changed on 5 December when they both attended the draw for the 2026 Fifa World Cup, alongside Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney, with the three leaders holding a meeting afterwards. This all comes at a crucial moment as the three countries prepare for the review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) next year.
