Peru’s president Dina Boluarte (2022-2025) was impeached for ‘permanent moral incapacity’ on 9 October, becoming the latest leader to be felled by this nebulous charge that also toppled Martín Vizcarra (2018-2020) and Pedro Castillo (2021-2022). Whilst Boluarte faced numerous criminal investigations, it was her inability to get a grip on rising rates of extortion that proved to be her downfall. Her successor, President José Jerí, was next in the line of succession as president of congress. His priority is to deliver political stability before the April 2026 elections. He faces two central challenges in that endeavour: the visible growth of organised crime, and the possible resurgence of youth protests which erupted in September.
