EL SALVADOR: Government moves to punish protests

The legislative assembly has amended the penal code to lengthen the prison sentence for citizens found guilty of acts of public disorder, defined as blocking roads; taking over public or private buildings; or forcing the closure of hospitals. These actions each carry a prison sentence of up to eight years, and no option of parole under bail. The current sentence ranges from six months to four years with an option of parole.
