In brief: Paz faces escalation of fuel protests in Bolivia

*The director of the Bolivian workers’ union Central Obrera Boliviana (COB), Mario Argollo, has announced a national campaign of roadblocks to demand the reinstatement of fuel subsidies which were cut by President Rodrigo Paz’s government in December. The Paz administration has reached agreements with various economic sectors to limit the impact of protests which have been running intermittently since 21 December, but the COB has said it will only accept a full U-turn from the government on the subsidy elimination. The Paz administration has said that ending the fuel subsidy programme, which cost an estimated 4% of GDP in 2025, was crucial to restoring fiscal stability.
