*The Peruvian far-right party Renovación Popular (RP) has formally requested the launch of impeachment proceedings against President
José Jerí, saying it has gathered 80 signatures demanding an impeachment debate – above the required threshold of 78. The president of congress,
Fernando Rospigliosi, of the right-wing Fuerza Popular (FP), said however that further checks are needed to check the validity of the signatures. Jerí is under
intense pressure over his clandestine meetings with a Chinese businessman,
Yang Zhihua. Adding to the danger faced by Jerí, the motion to remove him has been filed as a ‘motion of censure’ rather than a presidential impeachment motion, on the basis that he assumed the presidency by default following the impeachment of
Dina Boluarte (2022-2025) due to his position as president of congress. As a result, impeachment would only require the backing of 66 legislators (a simple majority in the 130-seat unicameral congress) rather than the usual two-thirds majority of 87 votes.
